Tepnel Announces New DNA Test For Early Detection Of Familial Hypercholesterolaemia

Just beforehand of the expected release of clinical practice guidelines on Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) by the influential National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), Tepnel Life Sciences PLC (AIM: TED) today announced the launch of a DNA test for the early detection of FH, a genetic condition that predisposes individuals to high blood cholesterol levels and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The CE marked Elucigene FH20 outfit, validated for in vitro diagnostic use, can rapidly determine the 20 genetic mutations most commonly found in a UK based population, that are responsible for the disease.

FH is a public health problem end-to-end the world with an estimated 10 million multitude affected, the majority of who testament suffer an adverse coronary thrombosis event before they ar 65 years old. A common genetic disorder, the potentially lethal condition occurs in 1 of 500 people in Europe and North America. In the United Kingdom it is estimated that up to 110,000 people ar affected with FH and 75% of these cases are undiagnosed.

The NICE consultation on a drawing of guidelines for employment by the National Health Service (NHS) in England and Wales is nowadays being finalized with anticipated publication for August, 2008. NICE is expected to recommend that all FH patients are offered a DNA test with subsequent cascade cover to be performed where the mutation is identified in a patient.

In a recent UK fender study the test identified a 52% mutation detection rate in a sample of 110 FH heterozygous patients. "The study findings validate Elucigene FH20 as a worthful component for future FH screening programs in the United Kingdom, providing a cost-efficient and simple method for confirmatory a person has hereditary this mortal condition," aforementioned Ben Matzilevich, Tepnel's Chief Executive Officer. "For effective treatment, early identification of persons with FH is essential and FH20 offers the NHS the right tool at the right time to implement the new clinical practice guidelines."

Currently late-stage clinical indications that propose a patient is affected with FH are increased serum cholesterin concentration, tendon xanthomas and premature coronary thrombosis heart disease. Treatment with statins to lower cholesterol levels is effective, just preventative treatment requires early diagnosis. Pre-symptomatic identification of FH individuals can insure the health risks of high cholesterin are minimized through seize modifications to diet and lifestyle.

Early detection requires identification of genetic mutations of the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) gene, the apoloiprotein B-100 (Apo B) gene or the proprotein converatse subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) gene which are the suit of FH. Unlike other genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, where an affected affected role must inherit two copies of the mutated factor, FH has an autosomal dominant traffic pattern of inheritance and requires the affected patient to carry solely one copy of the mutated cistron.

While such DNA analysis and chromosomal mutation detection is crucial for the definitive diagnosis of FH, the testing can be irksome and expensive due to the exceedingly heterogeneous nature of the LDLR factor.

Following the confirmation of mutation status of an FH patient using the rapid and cost-effective Elucigene FH20 check, the new Tepnel test can be used to detect early previously undiagnosed family members with FH through shower screening programs.

The Elucigene FH20 examine is developed and manufactured within quality systems commissioned to ISO9001 and ISO13485 and complies with the European Community Directive 98/79/EC. The test is non for use in diagnostic procedures in the USA.

Jenny Lindfors, When The Night Time Comes

Irish creative person Jenny Lindfors is the latest hopeful debutant to join the large and growing concourse of slightly retro, more often than not acoustic isaac M. Singer songwriters clamoring for your attention. The competition is tough out there. When The Night Time Comes could be described as a romanticistic song cycle whether it's all about one relationship or several beginning and ending as it does with songs themed about desire and lust, and getting dark and emotionally messy in the middle. Hardly a fresh topic, but the tale is in the telling, so is she up to it?

She's sure blessed with a smashing, bluesy vocalisation and knows how to use it, coming across a bit like Bonnie Raitt or Susan Tedeschi on the confident opener Night Time, which, wish several other tracks has an ever-so-slightly 'ethnic' vibration courtesy of James Guilmartin's djembe drum. There's a distinctly CSNY flavour to the vocal harmonies on Voodoo, and definite dark glasses of Joni Mitchell on the ballads I Don't Really Want You Here and By The Wayside, while Sheryl Crow may have been the role model on the more upbeat Time Warp and Play It Away.

Lindfors plays guitar, banjo, ukulele and percussion and even does her own backing vocals at times as well as producing and penning all the material. Whether that was down to the constraints of the budget or an outsized ego, there's a little too much of Jenny and non enough of other masses on this overly autobiographical effort. It sags a third of the direction in with the schmaltzy cello and awkward lyrics of Lovestage, and things get worse with Looming, which suffers similar problems.

Lindfors is at her best on the more rocking tracks when the focus is more on her voice than what she's saying. By the time her 40 minutes ar up, you may be wishing she'd either branch out her issue matter or try singing someone else's songs the corporeal isn't impregnable enough to engage end-to-end and perhaps bring forth someone else in to produce.

'Garfield Minus Garfield' equals book deal

Quick math: What do you contract when you remove the title fictitious character from a legendary comic strip and post the eerily entertaining results online?

A book deal.

In October, Ballantine Books will publish Garfield Minus Garfield, a version of the fat-cat comic strip that removes all characters leave out for Jon Arbuckle. The results, posted daily at the wildly popular garfieldminusgarfield.net, is a pleasurably creepy look into the lonely life of a young, schizophrenic bachelor.

The full-color book release coincides with the 30th anniversary of Garfield and will hit shelves simultaneously with a new anthology, Thirty Years of Laughs and Lasagna: The Life and Times of a Fat, Furry Legend.

The coupling of the Web comic and original strip was made possible by an endorsement from Garfield creator Jim Davis, who became a fan of Garfield Minus Garfield creator Dan Walsh and granted permission to race his original work aboard the Web comics in the forthcoming book.

I consider its an inspired thing to do, Davis said in a press release. I want to thank Dan for enabling me to see another side of Garfield. Some strips he chose were slappers: Oh, I could have left that out, it would have been funnier.

Naturally, Walsh is prestigious by the praise - and plausibly relieved a lawsuit didnt drop on his doorstep. Its not often an artist endorses something that completely alters what originally made him or her famous.

Thanks to the awful generosity and humor of Jim Davis, Garfield Minus Garfield is about to become a book, and Im absolutely honored to be a part of it, said the Dublin, Ireland-based Walsh.

Madonna tickets selling fast: Live Nation

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Madonna fans have turned out in record numbers for her world tour, concert promoter Live Nation Inc said on Thursday, seeking to knock down reports the Material Girl is losing her appeal.

The Los Angeles company said Madonna had sold more than one million tickets -- over 90 percent of those available -- for Madonna's 42-date global "Sticky & Sweet" tour, which kicks off in Cardiff, Wales on August 23.

Live Nation is trying to transform itself into a comprehensive music company, offering artists recording contracts and merchandising deals, as well as touring and access to its live venues. Madonna was one of the biggest names the company has signed for a reported $120 million contract.

The New York Post reported on Tuesday that Madonna was failing to sell out certain venues, including a November date at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles that sold just 27,000 of 43,000 seats.

Live Nation spokesman John Vlautin confirmed the Los Angeles numbers, but said the global tour's ticket sales are on target to gross more than $250 million, which would shatter Madonna's own previous record for a female artist of $195 million from "Confessions On A Dancefloor" tour two years ago.

It has been a difficult month for Live Nation, with speculation mounting on whether the company overpaid to sign artists such as Madonna and rapper Jay-Z to be part of its new '360-degree' business model.

Live Nation lost its chairman, Michael Cohl, last week after a fallout with Chief Executive Michael Rapino over this strategy. Cohl, who was head of Live Nation's artists division, had wanted to sign artists at a quicker pace, but Rapino wanted to sign around four to six marquee names a year. Cohl is now a consultant to the company.

There has also been concern the slowing U.S. economy would hurt nonessential items such as rock concert tickets, which can cost up to $200 each for major artists -- the larger share of Live Nation's revenue streams.

Live Nation's management has said it is has seen no impact from the slowing economy, Vlautin said.
